As Promised "Piccoli"

Here are the illustration from the book "Piccoli"
I just love them!!! The line work is amazing! I even love the end papers.
The illustrations are done in a few colors. You have full color and then
tone on tone and and monochromatic as well. I will treasure these
always! Hope they will inspire you too.
Have a great week!

I did a search for it after reading your last post and could find nothing. BTW, in case you weren't aware of it, there are several groups on Flickr dedicated to sharing the illustration from mid-century childrens books:

  19. I love the drawings, and I do remember his work from Bugs Bunny - one of my favorites growing up. And just think: I'm sure his work was done by hand - no Photoshop to rely on!

  21. Hey Vanessa, thanks for the return visit :o) The backgrounds have always been so mesmerizing for me. I would go to the theater and see an animated film and just admire the background art, then I'd have to go and see the same movie.... to watch the movie. :o) I follow a blog that I thought you might like. It's at animationbackgrounds.blogspot.com. Rob Richards does a phenomenal job of removing the characters and retaining the integrity of the background artwork. I think you'll enjoy it. God bless you my friend

One day, I'll be able to splurge on beautiful books like this.

  23. I am in LOVE, I am in LOVE, I am in LOVE! Oh my goodness GRACIOUS! This is an incredible book. I cannot believe the breadth of styles that Paul Julian used. I am in LOOOOOOOOVE! No wonder you have been seeking this. No wonder you grabbed this while you could. I mean GOSH, LOOK at this. The teacup on the cover, the way it's rendered, is beautiful. Better than computer-generated, and all the more impressive since they didn't have computers back then. Oh, Vanessa, I could stare at this all day. I can see how he has influenced you in the best possible ways. Oh, you lucky, lucky girl!

Say what? Your husband did not get this for Mother's Day? I don't know what could beat this, but bless his heart for trying.

  25. Oh great! where is my comment? Vee, Bella and I were talking about this book of yours, and we both notice how there are so many styles of illustration on one book! This is fabulous.

I have so many childrens' books dated in the early 1900s given to us by a firend whose mother was a teacher. They were actually children's schoolbooks. Amazing! They were illustrated by Willie Pogany, Kate Nielsen, Arthur Rackham, Maxfield Parish!!!

And my husband thinks we have so many books and need to get rid of some of them...

    I did.

I got rid of his university textbooks!

  26. Thats soooo cool! I have a serious addiction to picture books and books on animals as well. I hit up Goodwill stores and half priced book stores weekly in search of discarded treasures. If i purchased every one i found I would be in real trouble. I force myself to rethink whether or not i need each one before i leave the store. I could really turn into a book hoarder if i wasnt careful!!!
    thanks for sharing the book!

and it is always, always so wonderful to hear from you! Are you sewing too? Wow, you are one amazing lady...I'm sure the doll turned out perfectly...how could it not?! Yes, time is flying, and we will touch base definitely. You enjoy this weekend with your baby girl and hubby and just treat yourself right...kick up your shoes and all. I will try to do the same..and hopefully paint some in between! : ) Thanks for your sweet visit - you make my day, Nester..you really do. Hugs to you, my sweet friend!

  29. Yes, it is beautiful and with a very classical line, still that now a lot of illustrators recover it. Kisses to the utmost. Good weekend

  33. HAPPY MOTHER'S DAY, DARLIN'!!!! Are you being pampered? Are you being swaddled in coos and kisses??? Didja get to eat your favorite foods today? Did you sing and dance and shake your groove thing???? I hope you are having the most incredible day. I appreciate YOU and moms everywhere. Me, I got to read a book AND take an afternoon snoozer. 37. OH yes, they are fantastic illos and even appeal to such a bizarre person as me. Great technique and limited color pallet. OK, really have to run this time... to the next post.... starting to sweat a tad... SLIP!!! OUCH, hit my head on the darn background... while it may be green, it really doesn't feel like grass V! You should really put something softer on here ;).
