My World

Once I was asked," Do you ever create any dark illustrations and artwork?"
It's so funny because I have really had a somewhat of a rough childhood.
When I was born the doctors told my parents that if I lived more than
2 days I would be mentally retard. Okay, so I am a little retarded he he he!
It was a difficult pregnancy for my parents. Being a child of the 60's racism
was a part of everyday life for us. I remember when my parent purchase
our very first home in Irvington, New Jersey. We were one of the first black
families to move into the neighborhood and our neighbors weren't happy
about it! The police would constantly stop my dad who drove a shiny black
Caddy. They would stop us and ask my dad," Is this your car boy? Are these
your children boy? And why are you in this section of town?" It scared my
sister Coy and I. I could see the humiliation and the frustration that our
Dad was feeling. Sometimes when I think about it, it still saddens me.
We were not raised like other children. My parents taught us to embrace all
people. That's why you see it in my illustrations. I love people!!
Pure and simple.
Even though the world we lived in at the time didn't reflect that.
The best times where in front of our T.V. with Rocky and Bullwinkle,
Penelope Pitstop, Captain Kangaroo, Mr. Magoo, and Bugs Bunny. These
shows brought me so much joy and inspiration and became a
magical vehicle to transport me to a joyful place. Oh trust me, I could go
to a dark place and bring up some stuff that could really blow your mind.
I suffered with chronic depression for a large portion of my life.
A dark place that I remember, but never want to go back too.
I choose to be HAPPY! In a world where so many people deal with
low self worth, and bad feeling toward themselves and other,
and overwhelming depression. I choose to create illustrations that
make you laugh when all you want to do is cry.
Art that is inspirational without being preachy. Word pictures
that will give something back when the world takes everything from you.
Maybe I create children art and illustrations to restore and heal the child
in each one of us.
If my illustrations are the magic pill that makes you smile and laugh out loud
then maybe we won't need as much medication with all the dang side effects.
I'm just saying'...
Have a great one.

Thanks for creating and sharing your multi-cultural illustration. This is a very timely post and it has hit home with me. I am not a '60's child but I can see some of the residue from those days. Thanks again.

We have to fight prejudice in all its ugly forms. I'm sorry that happened to your family. And I'm glad you've chosen happy. :) You are such a caring person, Vanessa. It shows in everything that you draw, and write. What a gift to all of us!

Excellent words Vanessa~~I grew up in the military in the '60s and what you lived through was news on the TV I did not understand. We were a two level society; enlisted and officers. At that point, there did not seem to be a color barrier and I was blessed with friends of all backgrounds. Being in Post schools or Parochial was the same--everyone was equal unless you were on the way to the principals office.
And then Dad retired and we moved HERE and great day! Did I ever have an eye opening to the *real* world.
I love what you draw, the joy you put in the world, the happiness you share in the bloggosphere.
You are exceedingly blessed and pass that on to all of your readers! :-)

What a successful artist and human being you are, to be able to transmit those feelings into such great art for the rest of us to enjoy!

Beautiful post! Your parents sound amazing, to raise you with so much love for others even in the face of so much hatred. Much of who I am comes from all the awful, all the good, everything that was childhood.

I was far across the country watching the same cartoons! The gift of laughter! Best gift of all! I'm so glad you're passing it along in your artwork! Thank you!

Happy New Year to you! I had a similar upbringing in Illinois and I too chose not to let it bring me down. Those shows were hilarious! Entertainment without violence. Keep up the good work!

Vanessa you are such an inspiration girl!! Your happy vibes certainly do seep through every illustration you create, just looking at your work always puts a smile on my face! And I think your point about healing depression with ways and means other than drugs is a VERY VERY pertinent one... Here's to a TRUCKLOAD of happy times in 2011! :D

You are my medicine woman, you are, you are! Gimme my happy pill. I look at your collages and dolls and drawings, and the giddiness, joy, and innocence just wash right over me and fill me with bliss! You are a true asset to humankind, you know that? When I sit here and read about this awful thing or that, I feel dejected. But then one glance at your dancing characters with those sideways grins sets my heart ablaze. You are a beautiful phoenix, and I'm so proud to know you.

You are a pure ray of sunshine! I can't help but smile when I click onto your blog! There is always a smiling face ready to greet me :o)

We've been homebound for days, we don't have the equipment here to deal with snow and ice so it's pretty much a stay home till it's clear thing. My daughter is here from Virginia on her way back from China I haven't even gotten to spend any time with her as she is snowed in elsewhere :(. I will pray that your snowfall is light. If not stay bundled up and keep a fire going ;) XOXOXO

I can only imagine what that sort of racism would be like to experience but I certainly have experienced the 'black dog'. Your work really does a generous quality about it that just glows with goodwill to all men. Thanks for sharing your story and your work.

Dear Vanessa,
What you wrOte about your childhood is really sad. Why are people so fuLl of fear for what is different.
Now, as you wrote it,I thought about how this must have been. I guess it was very burdensome to deal with the harassment and unfairness of your neighbours.
It is not that long ago, is it?
I hope that this has really changed, but I suppose there is still a long way to go.
And iniquitousness is everywhere. Still so many people were mistreat for nationality, religion, colour of skin, political attitude or sexual orientation.
I believe in he healing power of art and the healing power of laughter. The combination of art to laugh is wonderful.
And it works!!!!!
Your illustrations made my day, more that one time
and I am not surprised you loved Rocky and Bullwinkle and Mr Magoo (like I do ), I see it in your style, it is very sweet and special and very you, but the old school of illustration shines through and this is even more wonderful, cause it reminds of childhood and this is good, when you want to heal the inner child.
I love your work.
And I like you fopr your humor and wisdom and kindnes.
One day I want to have a cup of coffee with you.
Who knows...
Have a great day
Janine

Hey stranger! I hope you had a great holiday-sorry I haven't stopped by in a while.

First of all, let me say I've seen pictures of you, and I have a hard time believing you're a child of the 60's!...but obviously you were watching all the same shows I was watching at the time, so I guess I believe you.

Thanks for sharing this amazing and inspiring story. You're something else...I can't get enough of those magic pills that can only come from you!

Happy New Year Vanessa! Your story reminds me of an older song by gospel singer Larnelle Harris, called I choose joy! That is what you have chosen to do with your life. I also lived in a military environment, then we moved to a civilian neighborhood. I was shocked to see that not all people experienced what I had been exposed to. We did not face as harsh a treatment like you did, but more so a lack of knowledge by some. They couldn't figure out how I was not like the people they see on the Jeffersons, or Good Times.

Awwwwww, sweet Veeee. I hope you're feeling better. The flu is no fun. It's no wonder! You are so busy, you've probably worn yourself down, poor thing. Well, I just swung by to give you a kiss on your freshly sanitized forehead (I brought alcohol wipes), and to say thank you for the mental massage. You can camp out in my head any time. Plenty o'room. Next time, please do wear your heels. I could use a few brain jabs.

Rest! Fluids! And lots of love!

What a great story. I also was inspired the Looney Tunes and other classic characters. During rough times they become friends you never knew you had. I'm glad you didn't let those bad times make you a different story. Love the illo. Especially the octopus.

You don't have to go to any dark place in your mind to make a drawing if you don't want to do it.
Everyone is different and chooses different things as inspiration.
Your joyful drawings are great and make people smile. That's important in a world with already many things to make us feel sad.
Keep the happiness.

His work reflects his joy, I like. Racism will never understand here suffered the gypsy people, and now also rumania, not to the point where you say, but in other ways that I think are too painful. Hey Vanessa, thankyou you have a great one too.

You have an amazing sense of design you klnow, just great balance and dynamics, the way your work leads our eye.

now I know why my work is so dark - it must be the opposite of my childhood? I like how you explained that, thankyou, :)

cheers again!

Loni Edwards said...

Hi Vanessa! Your post was so fitting for me to read today (MLK day). I loved it. Thank you for taking us down a very personal path. I am sorry that happened to your family. My childhood wasn't the greatest either (not racism, but poverty) and there were so many times that, like you, Capt. Kangaroo, Felix the Cat and Bugs Bunny turned my dark world bright again. So in a way, I do understand that part. I can also relate to the part about not drawing dark stuff. I've been told that many times. "Why are your drawings so happy all of the time?" When I draw I feel so good, and it always feels right when I draw happy little animals or people. Very rarely do I draw sad stuff. I really do admire the dark stuff and like you, I know I could do it, but I don't really want to. It's just not me. Great post, and of course, great HAPPY illo :)
Peace!
Loni

And happy you are Vanessa! I was born in 1961, and my grandfather owned a bar in Detroit. So my relatives were some of the few white folks in a predominantly black neighborhood....Lots of vandalism, including a car that was driven through the side of the building...I remember being called honky and such as we walked to or from our car, witnessing fist fights. None of this was as intense as what my parents experienced in their schools as kids, though. Later, in the 1980's, although the race riots had quieted, I had a few relatives who stubbornly refused to leave their homes for the suburbs, and ended up with terrible losses - a fatal shooting, a fatal hit and run. I agree. There's enough sadness and negativity in the world - much of it born of ignorance and intolerance. I much prefer happy art and putting the sort of contagious, positive energy that you exude out into the world! Thank you for sharing your joy with us Vanessa!

Hi Vanessa, Your story is my story too. The African Americans I know back were all raised as you were: that's why racism (still) hurts so much, and why it's unfortunately still chipping away at us in ways no one seems to acknowledge or understand. What you described as your artistic vision is what true art is: thank you for sharing yours.

Vanessa, I know for a fact that when you're a kid and things get really tough, the probable thing to do is to create your own magical realm, when you are the prince and no one can hurt you. A world when all your dreams are possible and animals, trees and other kids love you. I invented such a place for myself and I still live there cause it's so beautiful that I never want to leave. :D
So, Let me thank you for letting us in to YOUR magic realm, where there is fun in every possible direction. I really love it there! :D Real life can really suck sometimes and it's really awesome that a story or an illustration can make us laugh our heads off and suddenly make it better. I LOVE your work, you are mazing.
